A bulging disc can cause pain. Pain symptoms include:
- pain in the location of the bulge (i.e. localized pain); or
- radiating pain into arms (if the bulge is in the neck part of the spine) or into the legs (if the bulge is in the lower back).
Radiating pain can take many forms such as:
- tingling;
- numbing;
- burning pain; and
- shooting pain.
to name a few.
Okay, so you have pain from your disc bulge. What can you do about it?
Traditional treatment options include:
- chiropractic care;
- physical therapy;
- cortisone injections;
- muscle relaxants;
- anti-inflammatory drugs (i.e. NSAIDS);
- heat packs/pads;
- rest;
- pain medication;
- electrical therapy;
- exercises; and
- surgery (usually for herniated discs – and not too often at that).
Some people do yoga for back pain as well with some success (it’s best to locate a yoga instructor that has some training and experience teaching yoga for back pain).
The trouble with these traditional bulging disc treatments is that they aim to treat the symptom and not the cause. In my article Herniated Disc vs Bulging Disc – What’s the Difference? I explain that the two main causes of disc bulges are trauma and muscle imbalances.
Therefore, when dealing with any back pain stemming from a disc bulge, it makes sense (to me) to treat the cause, not just the symptom.
I appreciate immediate pain relief is often necessary – and that’s where treating bulging disc pain is helpful.
If you’ve undergone some or several of the treatment options set out above and still don’t have pain relief, then consider two of the following natural innovative back pain relief options – that do treat bulging discs.
- Muscle Balance Therapy; and
- Inversion Therapy.
Muscle Balance Therapy for Bulging Disc Pain
Muscle Balance Therapy is a two-step process. First, you must assess yourself to find out what your muscle imbalance is. Second, depending on your muscle imbalance, you are prescribed exercises designed to correct the imbalance. Essentially the exercises are designed to target your weakened, less-developed muscles to correct the imbalance.
Inversion Therapy for Bulging Disc Pain
Inversion therapy, according to the Healthy Back Institute, is for bulging disc conditions and pain. The equipment to do inversion therapy is a table you lie on that suspends you upside down; in an inverted position.
When you’re inverted, you reverse the pull of gravity as your spine normally experiences it which reduces pressure to your discs (and other parts of your spine).
